Here is a description of each wood species we use for these chairs:
Southern Pine
Southern Pine is the most economical wood option for outdoor furniture, making it a popular choice for budget-conscious projects. It is readily available and takes well to cutting, shaping, and fastening. However, despite being strong and sturdy, Southern Pine is not naturally durable when exposed to outdoor elements over time. It is prone to warping, cracking, and weathering without proper care. To enhance its longevity and performance outdoors, it is strongly recommended to apply a high-quality exterior paint or protective finish. Regular maintenance is essential to keep the wood looking good and structurally sound.
Cypress Wood
Cypress is a strong, durable wood that performs well in outdoor environments, making it a solid choice for outdoor furniture. Naturally resistant to decay, rot, and insects due to the oil cypressene found in the wood, it holds up well in humid or wet climates without requiring chemical treatment. Cypress has a straight grain and a light, warm color that weathers to a silvery gray if left untreated. While it’s more expensive than Southern Pine, it offers a good balance of beauty, workability, and natural weather resistance. For added protection and to preserve its natural color, a clear outdoor sealant or finish is recommended.
Cedar
Cedar is a popular and reliable choice for outdoor furniture due to its natural resistance to moisture, decay, and insect damage. Lightweight yet stable, cedar is easy to work with and resists warping and cracking, even in fluctuating weather conditions. Its pleasant aroma and attractive reddish-brown color add to its appeal, though it will gradually fade to a soft gray if left unfinished. While more expensive than Southern Pine and Cypress, cedar offers a longer-lasting, low-maintenance option. To maintain its rich color and extend its lifespan, applying a protective outdoor sealant or stain is recommended.
